The Opportunity:
An established and growing property development business is seeking an experienced Senior Bookkeeper to support the finance function across a portfolio of residential development projects and entities. Working directly alongside the Director, this is a broad, hands-on position covering bookkeeping, payroll, VAT, invoicing, reporting, cash flow management and finance administration.

This role would suit someone who enjoys operating within an entrepreneurial, fast-paced environment and is confident taking ownership of day-to-day finance operations whilst helping improve and streamline existing processes.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Bookkeeping
  • Maintain accurate financial records across multiple entities using Xero, QuickBooks and Excel.
  • Post and reconcile bank transactions, income and expenditure.
  • Maintain and manage chart of accounts and transaction coding.
  • Handle inter-company reconciliations and double-entry bookkeeping.
  • Payroll
  • Run monthly payroll processes and associated journals.
  • Manage PAYE, National Insurance and pension contributions.
  • Liaise with external payroll providers and accountants where required.
  • VAT
  • Prepare and submit quarterly VAT returns across multiple entities.
  • Maintain VAT schedules and supporting documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with HMRC requirements.
  • Accounts Payable & Receivable
  • Process supplier invoices and oversee payment workflows.
  • Raise client invoices and maintain AP / AR records.
  • Reconcile project expenditure against budgets.
  • Cash Flow & Reporting
  • Maintain project and company cash flow reporting.
  • Assist with forecasting and financial tracking across developments.
  • Prepare monthly management information and director-level reporting.
  • Finance Administration & Compliance
  • Ensure accurate financial records and supporting documentation are maintained.
  • Support external accountants and advisors where required.
  • Assist in improving finance processes and operational efficiencies.
Essential Requirements:
  • Minimum 5 years’ bookkeeping or accounting experience.
  • Strong working knowledge of Excel and accounting systems such as Xero, Sage or QuickBooks.
  • Experience preparing and submitting VAT returns.
  • Payroll processing experience.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple workstreams.
  • Proactive and commercially minded approach.
  • Confident written and verbal communication skills.
Desirable Experience:
  • Property development, construction or real estate sector experience.
  • Exposure to development finance metrics including GDV, IRR, loan-to-cost and loan-to-value.
  • Knowledge of CIS, SDLT, VAT option to tax, Section 106 agreements and CIL.
  • Part-qualified or qualified accountant (AAT, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
  • Experience with Microsoft Project, SharePoint or OneDrive.
  • Exposure to automation tools or AI-led finance workflows.
